It wasnt too bad once i got going taking bits off Now the hard part of remembering where everything go's when i eventually put it back together

There must have been a thousand plugs to unplug

that explains the dropped piston and why it was running a bit poo, was there any contact with the head anywhere?

No didnt come into contact with the head at all.

The knocking noise was the bottom of the piston hitting internally as the bend in the conrod was pulling the piston down further than it should do.

Marked it on this photo where it was hitting.

shouldn't be too bad to sort it new conrods, piston/s and a hone of the bores perhaps, new head of course,

are you going to uprate any parts as it's apart?

Yeah think i shall replace all the rods and pistons with uprated ones.. been looking at Arrow H section rods but are costly £200 each and then about another £500 ontop for the pistons

Will pop into ivor searles tomorrow and see what prices they can come up with.

i just did the rods when i done mine and went for BAM pistons instead, £400 from jabbasport, i got my rods second hand but new, have you looked at IE engineering for rods? make sure you match the wrist pin sizes up when you get the pistons/rods if not you'll be naffed, i'd get 20mm ones if you plan on running big pony's later on

Not sure if they do or not, i'd say theres a good chance that they do though.

Oh yeah i've seen a few threads on other forums about using mineral oil for the first thousand miles to bed the rings in? Is that right? It says using synthetic oil can cause glazing ect and you may end up doing the job again..

yep mineral oil for the first thousand miles, oil change after 500 again for mineral oil iirc, then change for synthetic oil and run as normal

i did a thread on the seat forum about running in, i'll dig out and put a link up.

Think its a good idea to uprated while your at it, that way you can always uprate turbo etc.. at later date or from selling on point.

No worries mate, if you want hand at all let me know, oh if you plan on stripping the head down yourself you need a special valce spring compressor to get in the small exhaust valve holes

The cylinder head is currently at ivor searles being crack tested, they seem to think that the only way it could have bent a conrod was through hydraulic compression. So possibly sucked some coolant/oil in through a crack or headgasket failed. It wasnt using any coolant or oil up untill then though. But im not sure myself, will see what they say.

They also said it would take less than an eggcup full of water to bend it

a mate said thats what he thought it could have been and he works at searles aswell, theres not really anything else that could have caused it, no bearings collapsed, no dropped valves etc
