Bit more from today's lunch hour, chose to redo the bottom section of the tower, now I two pieces now four. Took a bit of playing around but got there, looks much better. Also swaged to match the top half. And started cutting up the original gear mech to see how it works and check clearance.

Bit more, can get cutting the selector into the lid, and then start fixing the vw unit into the one Im making

Stayed late and done a bit more, doesn't look much but now onto the fidley bits and head scratching.
So cleaned the original housing up, all brackets etc cut off I don't need. Then set about cutting the lid out so the gear stick can come through the alloy holder. Still not 100% what parts I will use of the vw item so will show as I go.

Been working on this for a while, big alloy rad and coller, first time for a mock up today. I think I was a little optimistic expecting it just to fit how I imagined! Also got to ram an oil cooler somewhere too.

Plan is to drop the intercooler down 30mm, so the bonnet pin has good clearance. So notched the front crossmember, mount it all central not wonky like standard just to make things even more impossible. Should turn out ok, lucky I have a grinder and can weld otherwise I would have had a big mental break down!

More on the shifter, turned some spacers and finished cutting the lid in, all tacked up ready for the bottom sections to go on

Cheers chaps, got 5 days off now. So not much will happen, hope to get the block built up and start on cleaning the head.

New knob and flick switches fitted on the bottom half of the shifter tower, taking some switches out the dash facia for gauges so these I thought were spot on.

Will be splitting the hole shifter mechanism and cleaning, painting and blasting it then putting it back together before it goes in.

Small update, been doing a bit more fab work on the shifter and additional piece, getting there now! 

So first up, decided I needed more strength in the tower where the shifter cables bolt to externally, so took a rough template from the rubber gasket type piece and then took several measurements from the vw unit. This will be welded over the new casing once it's done. 




So onto the next idea, only thing I'm going to miss from the mk4, the cup holder! So thought I would try make a Motorsport themed one, should work out well once I tweaked it, will be detachable from the passenger corner on the sifter tower.

Bit more done today, got the shifter pretty much done now, just the bottom section to go on, but it all bolts up and works so functionally done! And it hasn't cost a penny!  

So I continued to cut the vw unit down, and cut the lugs off the front to fit it up into the unit I made, bolted it up and marked from the inside the holes then centred it, and put a pilot hole from the inside out, then drilled the holes out from the outside in with the cone cutter.




Tool the vw unit out, lined the brace I made up with the holes I cut to get my placement for the two bolt holes. Braced with wood and a couple small g clamps so I didn't bend the material instead of going through it


So then for bolting it up, vw central plate that holds the cables then the rubber gasket, brace plate from yesterday then the alloy tower. The brace will be welded onto the tower in the end!

Got a bit more done today, started on the block too but no pics. 

Made a start on my dash insert too, was undecided where to mount my gauges, and didn't want to move the head unit so got the dremel and soldering iron out and got to work!







Also got the altanator ready to go on the engine once that's done. Cleaned the plastic case and a bit of back to black, all new stainless steel hardware too

that's a whole heap of work for a daily, good skills tho Joe (as usual)

the plastic welding is a whole lot better than when we attempted to turn my front bumper into a US spec...

Haven't updated in a while, been fairly busy trying to get a few other jobs done for others! Here's a few pics from over the last month or so of infil polishing jobs I've been doing, next year there will be a lot more! If anyone is unsure the mk2 is being built as a van to haul it all about





So this is the next on the mk2, should get it folded today and a brace made, so can get it welded in over Xmas


Also had my head rebuilt the other week, was stripped, steam cleaned, skimmed, new seals, exhaust valve guides resleeved and diamond honed to spec, recut valve seats, refaced valves and all put together



And painted all minty!


Rocker cover painted with left over paint from my bay, had to paint it in the polishing room as it was the only warm place, so got a couple little bits in it :(

Just to keep the thread a live, welded up the crossmember, cut in new metal to drop the intercooler so the bonnet pin doesn't go through the core. Templates for mounts cut now too, so hopefully next week the cooler will be mounted at the bottom ready for the rad to go in too.

Cheers dude, got loads of other bits done too just not on the car so nothing to show in a picture, oil cooler mounts and the shifter tower brackets to be done this week, all the shifter is tacked and cut in over the tunnel in the car too, hard to take photos in a dark garage!
