| woohh sorry about the caps. right the other day i went round a corner on a country road and there was a fecking bus overtaking a cyclist on my side of the road (yes it was a blind corner). as you can imagine i stapped on my brakes which were about as useful as an umbrella out the window, didnt even lock up just failed to work well. barely missed the bus but as you can imagine it shat me up. so i was wondering how much is it to fit abs to my golf (mk3 1.4) and how is it done. any help would be great | |

| ABS brakes are only supposed to stop you from locking up. They wouldnt necessarily be any better than new normal functioning disc brakes used properly. So they wouldnt of helped you in that situation. | |

| abs wont help especially considering the massive amount of work it would be to retro fit to your car. I think on the 1.4 they used 239mm non vented brakes.. you might be lucky and have vented ones. If you want to stop better get bigger brakes. You can get 256mm brakes from early mk3 gti's and all TDi's and 280mm from early VRs, you can also get 256mm from late 16v mk2 golfs etc, an array of seats have 280mm and 256mm brakes.
With a 1.4 256mm would be more than you would ever need, if you want to stay cheap just get all new discs and pads(try and get vented disks and the thinner pads that go with the vented discs)
My 8v has 288mm discs(late 97 reg) and they are MORE than enough as they also fitted them to VRs and 16vs so you shouldnt need massive brakes...
and ive just rambled on and probably made piss all sense so.. yeah lol | |

| you will need calipers, carriers, discs, pads and sometimes you have to change the hoses. Also if your carriers are cast into the hubs like 8v mk2s then you would need 2 whole hubs as well.. All depends on the current setup i cant remember what they are like on the 1.4s | |

| I sure you can swap to 256mm by swapping carriers and calipers on the mk3. not like the mk2 8v. I had a 1.4 ibiza i broke which looked like parts where transferable anyway and they are a missmatch of mk2 and 3 stuff I have a pair of 256mm calipers and carriers for £20 so swapping would be cheap option. best to show us all a pic of your hub without the wheel on so we can advise better | |

| yeah i think they have seperate carriers but i wasnt 100% certain thats why i said they could be part of the hub like some mk2s. If they have seperate carriers(look for 2 17mm bolts holding it onto the hub then lee's calipers and carriers will fit. | |

| tbh you dont need to up rate the discs that and Mk3 gti brakes wont fit unless you want to change the hubs over, just get genuine brake pads and bed them in porpperly | |
