| The Jetta wouldn't start last Thursday morning and I have been trying to fix it. It's a 1300 and I don't know whats up with it. I have changed the dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs, leads and have taken the carb off and cleaned it out. It wasn't dirty and seems to be fine. There is a spark and the fuel pump is working. I think the problem could possibly be timing or compression. When you turn it over on the key it tries to fire but kind of backfires out the carb. Anyone have any ideas? | |

| just a quick point, check the rubber gasket that the carb sits on, in case its split. my mates used to backfire from out of a little spit in the gasket, it eventually spat a big flame and then the car had to be towed home | |

| I didn't notice anything wrong with the gasket when I looked so I don't think that could be the problem. | |

i didnt mean it would be the cause of the non start. i was just commenting on the stste your gasket could be in as you stated that the carb has backfired before. | |

| I tested the compression 2 days ago and it's low. 50 55 70 60 psi Not good so I'm looking out for another 1300 to put in probably | |
