| Ok...before i came away with work the jetta was running well...but then it just started losing power. I would have my foot down, and it would just drop off, and then come back again randomly...the last time it happened it was the wrong dizzy cap...but now it has had new points, cap, rotor arm, and plugs. The only thing i can think to try next is the coil.
Anyone got any suggestions?? Need some ideas for when i get back so i can order parts.

| ^^^exactly what I was gonna say, carb iceing. Would explain why it suddenly started at random if the weather is cooler and more moisture in the air now than before. Also if it recovers by shutting off the throttle that usually points to iceing as once the air flow stops the pressure in the carb venturi rises and the heat soak from the engine will melt it in an instant. Is your hot air feed present/intact/functional??? | |

| i've had similar problems with a polo & my rocco, sounds like carb iceing. check the flap in the air box, pull pipe off and give it a suck the flap should move, if not replace or free off. hope this helps. | |

| Woudl a piece of rubber hose (for example turbo hose work)? or would i need to insulate it?
and if so...does anyone know the diameter (in mm)of the hose which i would need to fit it and a rough length? just so that i can order it now and then it will be at home to change straight away?

| What kinda speed was you driving at mike when it was causing probs? Icing will only occur at approx 60+ as the air become very cold caused by draft aswell. Thinking it could be the mechanical fuel pump on the front of the block now. Hmmm! | |

| hmmm it did that when i had it but as i had that stupid air filter on i assumed carb icing... When it happened to me once it wouldnt restart i got out and tapped the coil and it restarted which i thought was odd. Always meant to replace the coil but just forgot as sometimes it had the problem sometimes it didnt... | |

| our survey says....eh eh...it is not the fuel pump :( nor is it the rotor arm, or dizzy cap unless they are the same ones that i had on it before!!! God Damn it!!!! I am getting a little annoyed with it now...it doesn't help that i was looking at engine conversions for it either | |

| have you tried running a low pressure line down the fuel lines with the cap off to clear any little blockages that may be there from a past rusty fuel neck? Common mk1 problem. | |

| if he didnt take the feed hose off of the pump and run a low pressure compressed air line down that hose then try that. He probably just made a vacuum to suck the fuel back would be better to blow down the line. If i was a betting man i would say its down to the rusty filler neck as when i bought the car he offered me a filler neck with it as well that he said he bought for it. I had that off him.. well i still have it, so i bet its got a rusty filler neck and the crap has got down the lines, have you tried cleaning the carb out?
If its none of that then i would personally say you need to get a weber carb for it and bin that pierburg.

| have you tried taking the top off the carb and cleaning out the fuel bowl in side as gunk usually builds up at the bottom and clogs up the jets. Had the same thing happen on my beetle and gave the exact same symptoms.
You can get webers from ebay or ask about on here, edition38 etc.. Shouldnt cost too much. No more than £50 really? But they make quite a bit of difference to economy AND power.

| Will have a look at the fuel bowl tonight...if it's not that then i will be taking the fuel tank out and cleaning it at the weekend...went to tesco last night, not much fuel in the jetta, and it took me 40 mins to do 8 miles!!! ran better when i had put more fuel in so could possibly be something in the tank. Is there any kind of filter/strainer at the outlet for the tank? | |
