| Aweome work dude! I'm pretty sure you can buy ball joint extenders from somewhere, though I can't remember where now! And you probably know this already, but apparently you need to flip your track rod ends too, otherwise you get really bad bump steer. | |

I did those manually, so there was no reason actualy to draw it out but anyway... | |

| Very cool, wish I had access to the gear to at least make a massive hash of machining my own bits. Are you planning to take this on track when it's done? There's a thread on ClubGTI about the extender stuff that I was reading, they seemed to have done a group buy and they couldn't get the track rod angle sorted very easily to suit the extenders they bought. It seems that if you only do one or the other then it makes bump steer worse, you need to move them both by the same amount ideally. | |

you knows it measured the angle the wishbone sits at, and the length of the wishbone to work out how long the ball joint spacers need to be I want the wishbone to sit parallel to the steering rack im not 100% on my maths, A levels were almost 3 years ago, but it think ive got it.... So i redrew them properly on a cam programme (the screenshot is just of a modelling programme) and emailed them to my machinist friend who said he will put them on overnight so they should be done by tomorow morning!

Race cars are always close to the ground for a number of reasons; Centre of mass is low, therefore changes in direction use less effort and the car is more stable/less likely to roll. having it lower will make more downforce and reduced lift. when your driving along, the car is having to force its way into molecules of air. these air molecules 'squash' together which raises the air pressure. the air at the sides, top and bottom of the car is much lower. The high pressure air doesnt like being high and wants to equal its self out with the lower pressure air at the sides, so forces itself into these low pressure areas areas. what then happens is the air goes over the flat bonnet and roof, and under the underbelly and gain in velocity. the higher velocity the air is, the lower its pressure (and visa versa). this means the low pressure is sucking the car upwards (Lift). the windscreen and any other contours are doing the opposite and slowing the air down. this is good and bad on the top of the car. Its good as it creates downforce but bad because it creates drag. By lowering the car (and using a splitter), less air is able to go under it. Due to the low amount of air, its having to move much faster to fill the space under the car. this means low pressure which again causes lift, but this time its other way around as its sucking the car downwards making downforce. On the bottom of the car any curves and contours will act the opposite to the windscreen and create lift, which is why race cars use flat floors (and also diffusers, but they serve another purpose) a common and easy way of giving extra downforce is by giving the car rake. by having the front lower than the back, there is a triangle profile under the car. the small amount of air that is able to make its way under the low splitter now has even more space to fill so has to move even faster to do so making lower pressure under the car having the car at the factory ride hight would be advantageous as it would keep the optimum suspension roll centre which is essentially the amount of work the suspension can physically do. lowering the car ruins the roll centre, as the components are under constant compression. by extending the ball joints, it should put it back to near equilibrium. the disadvantage of them is that they add to the sprung weight, but thats another topic. i doubt you even read all that, so ill stop here. I could go on but this is a local car forum, not a dynamic engineering semenar!
