thermostat on a mk3 1800 single point engine

where is it please?

is it at the top rad hose just to lazy to look so i thought id ask b4 i went outside lol

i believe it's along the right hand front corner, about half way down, coming from the rad

where the top hose meets the engine?

i would of thought it was in the usual place inside the waterpump.

the water pump is on the drivers side bottom of the block, its driven buy the fan belt.

you should be able to jack the car up to get to the bottom of the pump. the stat is reached by undoing 2 10mm bolts and dropping the bottom plastic elbow off


this is made more difficult if you have PAS, as you PAS pump is in the way, you will have to remove this too.


personally i would take off the whole bracket.

i know mine's a 1.4, but it's directly below the dizzy cap in the pic

1400 and 1800 are completley different blocks.

The 1800 is down the left hand side but underneath the water pump, if you have pas then you have to move the pump to get to it, easy enough job just lots of 13's to undo.

2 x 10mm to get the plastic housing off the thermotwat.

thanks everyone.that would be y the bottom rad hose is always cold.

its defo worth a try


this way as well you get to learn a bit more about engine and car if you fix it yourself

im quite good at fixing cars but to be honest i have always been dare i say a vauxhall man.vw are new to me.just didnt wanna go taking bits off i didnt need to.thanks

as the majority of your PAS system is gonna have to be removed (if you have got PAS) if i was you i would probabaly spend another £20ish and get a new water pump.

this way youve killed 2 birds with one stone and may save yourself future hassle
