So after sometime of finding myself itching to get a mk2 I came across one that I had helped with the conversion of from a 1.8 8v to a healthy burbling 2.0 8v with some added extras. I had my mk4 sitting in the garage since I had got the A6, so a deal was struck and a swap was agreed.

A breif list of what its had done:

The interior completely removed and cleaned including the full carpet, door cards and seats. All items washed and steamed until running clear.
Sunroof over flow channels were pressure washed until running clean and clear.
1781cc engine removed and replaced with ’96 2000cc AGG block.
Original PB cylinder head port matched and gas flowed.
New valve guides and stem seals.
Valves cut back 30 deg.
New triple layer metal head gasket fitted.
New rubber rocker cover gasket fitted.
Piper 276 cam fitted.
Engine block painted black with smooth hammerite.
Engine mounts sandblasted and painted.
Front cross member sandblasted and painted black.
Front panel sandblasted and painted satin black.
Shock absorbers replaced with koni top adjustables.
Suspension springs replaced with Eibach 40mm lowering springs.
Front lower arms sandblasted, painted black then poly bushed.
Power assisted steering rack fitted and bracket poly bushed.
All power assisted steering pipes sandblasted and painted.
Power assisted steering reservoir bottle washed.
Power assisted steering reservoir bottle bracket sandblasted and painted.
New power steering fluid added.
Power assisted steering pump under drive pulley sandblasted, painted and fitted.
Power assisted steering pump sandblasted, washed and painted.
New Mk3 Golf power assisted steering knucklw rubber boot modified and fitted.
Anti roll bar sandblasted, painted and new bushes fitted.
Sub frame removed and sandblasted and painted black.
New suspension top mounts fitted.
Engine bay steam cleaned, sandblasted then painted.
All gear linkage arms sandblasted, painted and new bushes fitted.
Golf Mk3 GTi weighted gear selector rod sandblasted, painted then fitted.
All new ball ended gear linkage rods fitted.
Gearbox steam cleaned, sandblasted then painted.
Genuine Sachs clutch fitted.
All coolant pipes removed, inspected and cleaned.
Starter motor sandblasted and painted black.
Golf Mk3 GTi 2E distributor fitted.
Golf Mk2 GTi 16v front hubs and flanges sandblasted, painted and new wheel bearings fitted.
Golf Mk3 VR6 280mm calliper carriers sandblasted, painted and fitted.
Golf Mk2 G60 280mm grooved front discs fitted.
Aero grade exhaust manifold stainless steel studs and nuts fitted.
Aero grade stainless steel rocker box cover domed nuts fitted.
Miltek stainless steel four branch exhaust manifold fitted.
Magnex 60mm cat back stainless steel exhaust system fitted.
Gear lever end bush and ball replaced.
Smoked crystal rear lights fitted.
Crystal front head lights fitted.
Crystal front indicators fitted.
Crystal side repeaters fitted.
Radiator cowling, fan sandblasted and painted.
New lower ball joints fitted.
VW Golf Rallye 15” Sebring alloy wheels painted and fitted with 195/50/15 Bridgestone and Pirelli tyres.
Brake servo sandblasted and painted.
23.6mm VW brake master cylinder fitted.
New copper brake lines fitted where appropriate.
Goodridge 6 line braided flexible brake hose kit fitted.
Mk3 Golf GTi Front callipers sandblasted, painted and fitted.
Mk3 Golf VR6 front brake pads fitted.
Rear beam sandblasted, painted and poly bushed.
Grooved 226mm rear discs fitted.
New rear wheel bearings fitted.
Mk2 Golf GTi new rear brake pads fitted.
Mk3 Golf GTi Rear calipers stripped, sandblasted, painted, serviced then fitted.
New Golf Mk3 GTi handbrake cables fitted.
Rear brake compensator valve stripped and serviced.
Rear compensator valve brackets sandblasted and painted.
Inlet manifold sandblasted and port matched.
Throttle body stripped, cleaned and knife edged.
New Continental auxiliary and alternator belts fitted.
2L semi synthetic 75/90 gearbox oil fitted.
4.7L semi synthetic 10/40 engine oil and new filter fitted.
New Mk3 Golf GTi AGG cambelt and tensioner fitted.
New distributor cap, rotor arm and HT leads fitted.
New coolant thermostat fitted.
3L of red antifreeze with water wetter additive.
New Pagid Dot4 brake fluid fitted.
Storm single wiper mechanism fitted.
New front and rear wiper blades fitted.
CV joints stripped, washed, inspected and regreased.
Half moon plate sand blasted, painted and fitted.
Bonnet stay sandblasted and painted.
Bonnet catch sandblasted and painted.
Genuine VW Under bonnet sound proofing and stays fitted.
Dual tone horns fitted.
Space saver wheel and tyre inspected, inflated to correct pressure and fitted correctly in boot wheel well.

Got on with spraying the inner door skins with waxoil too and removed the front wings and bumpers to get going with the underseal today. Left some rust eater on the few patchs overnight so I'll also apply some more when I go out there today.

Bit more progress tonight, didnt get as much done as I wanted to but nevermind.

Finished off a few bits where I had missed with the underseal
Refitted the rear arches and rivetted them on properly
Refitted the exhaust
Refitted the rear bumper
Refitted front arch liners
Made a dial blank for gauges in the DIN position
Tidied up and painted the battery tray
Removed rear number plate plinth and prepped for paint
Stripped boot ready for removal and paint in the next few days
Also got hold of a genuine toolkit for the boot thanks to Guy

Today's progress was to get the paint on the way to being sorted.

Got the car out of the garage and swept it out tidied up tools so I had more space to work.

Got the rear bumper off the car again and then assessed as to what needed to be done with them.

Gave them a skim of filler too, just left that to dry for now.

Next up was the reg plate trim. With the removal of the black sticker around the window the rear looked too white now. out came the satin.

Then I got onto looking at the worst of the rust on the boot and the rear badge area. All was rubbed back to bare metal and i've left it with some rust eater on the rest overnight.

Slight run in the front one but i'll flat that when its dry tomorrow. Enjoying the painty goodness in the house now drunken

I have some more paint on order as I bought all of Halfords' stock Laughing The tailgate will have to wait till then.

So I decided it was too cold to spray teh rear up today so i got on with prepping the LHD wiper hole for being welded up. I decided after doing that its too cold to be messing about in the garage today Laughing

I'm glad you said you'll pull the glass as I'd have to pull it before welding near it or one spatter and it'll shatter anyway.

We will have that all ready for you to skim, smooth off and delete the hole all together.

I'm getting the mig wire on wednesday on my way home.

so it'll be early next week that I come over, ok.

If there is, we will cut that out and weld a new bit in too.

I think the scabs it had on it were pretty much all it had. the underside had next to nothing,
The shell has deffo been saved now that it's in Chris' hands.

Oh and I hate taking screens out..............alot.

Did some more work today, mainly more prep on the boot so it doesnt look much but i've put about 5 hours into prepping this boot alone now!

Flat-Primer-Flat-Primer Rolling Eyes Laughing

Be worth it in the end. Aim to get it all done by the end of the week. Painted and bumper on.
