temp gauge mk3 gti

my temp gauge is playing up and was wondering if its a common fault.

when driving the gauge sits just out the cold,

when in town driving it sits half way.

as soon as i start normal driving it goes back to cold.

is the sender faulty if so where does it sit.

i thought it was on the head on the side with a single spade clip.

gsf only list ones with two pins plugs ,so am i looking in the wrong area again.

sounds more like the thermostat is stuck open to me rather than a gauge fault?

mate in this weather it sounds about right. the temp will go up in town because you're mainly on tick over or revving more and you're not getting loads of cold air through the rad. when you drive on a main road the temp will go down because of the air flow. i drove all the way up the a1 to leeds in my mk2 last week and it stayed right on the cold until i got stuck in traffic and then it creeped to half way. as soon as i got going again it went straight down to cold again. keep your eye on it but i'm sure it will be fine.

Outside temperature has no affect on engine coolant temp.
Could be a stat stuck open or a dodgy housing.

thats a thermostat problem for sure, got the same problem on my TDi at the moment. The gauge should sit middle way all the time after a very short time like it did in my old gti.

of course it does. why don't you just put water in instead of anti-freeze?














it probably is the thermostat though...............

I've seen it loads.

Firstly check out temp gauge sender resistance.
Secondly replace thermostat if sender ok
ThIrdly top up with new antifreeze.

ok then to make sure i will change sender,plus stat,then anti freeze

As they have different resistances.
