Car sounds like a whistling kettle...high pitched firework??

Hey guys...my Golf keeps making this whining/whistling noise whilst being driven or on idle...but not as bad on idle...it's doing my head in and i have no idea what it is???

pressure being released from your expansion bottle?

i got told that my car doesn't have a fan belt as the fan is driven by an electric motor...whaaaaaaaa???

So what the hell is this annoying bloody noise...as it only really happens when driving...it stops when you dip the clutch

water pump belt/pas belt, expansion bottle too high a pressure any of those

pop round I'm only in littleport I can prob diagnose it for you and poss fix.

I'm having my ex mech mate do my do my cambelt kit friday and will ask him to check these...if i have no joy i will give you a call...cheers

Whats he charging you for doing the belt ?

I charge £35 labour on mk2 and mk3's thats for 8 and 16v's alike.

You can either supply the belt yourself or I can supply.
Just in case others need it doing.

Just paying with a few beers...he did the power steering and alternator belts for me a few weeks ago..

That may be the problem as the belt could have relaxed and is now squeeling because of this.

it was like that before the belts were changed.

might as well change the clutch while your there

incase you havent caught my drift the box has to come off so be sure its that before you get involved with it.

Take the alt belt off and run the car, obviously not for hours cause you have no water pump with that off but if the noise stops then it will be the alt bearing but it sounds like the clutch release bearing to me.

So what are the cases then...if it's the alternator what will i need?

..and if it's the clutch bearing huckleberry what will i need?

well if its the alternator funnily enough you will need another alternator...


if its the release bearing hes another funny one you will need a clutch release bearing

You can change the bearing by taking the green end cap off

your right i forgot about the weird clutch setup they have and the release bearing is at the opposite end

Just checked and the car had a new clutch fitted January this year...so i am hoping it will be that alternator bearing...how much am i looking at for one of these??

tbh dude it sounds more like the release bearing, newer clutchs put more stress on an old bearing
