| Ok so its J'ROF's mot soon (my rocco)and i dunno where to take her,
last year we went to the county council mot station, but as they dont do any mechanical work for you they charge for the re-test :(
luckily last year only involved a strut mount and brake clean up
anyone know any decent mot garages in around cambridge i can take her to?

| sounds cool
any other suggestions?
there hopefully shouldnt be too much wrong with it
just hate not knowing what sort of place im off to. Took my old beetle to a garage i'd not used before for an mot and the guy said
'ooh an old one, ill go get my rust finder'
and came back with a fook off screw driver which he intented to jab into my car to find holes!

| Just a warning, there is not many freindly MOT guys about nowadays, VOSA are clamping down on stations, the chap who used to do mine and turn a blind eye to silly sh1te like foglights, washer jets told me he couldnt do it anymore, apparantly VOSA now wait outside stations and spot retest cars as part of a quality control thing :|. Was a right nightmare getting my mk1 thru its last MOT. | |

yeh i agree that its better to know if somethings wrong and that the car is safe etc but you shoulda seen the size of the screw driver! It were huge and he was a rather heavy handed chap jabbing it in to the body work! i'll try one of the places you guys h ave recommended if not the there's always danny allen down in braintree, great chap but little bit far to go really so cambs performance tyres good then? they dub fans? what they like on tyre prices? Cheers for info so far guys/gals :bounce:

| yeah i know what you mean, they can be a little heavy handed but they usually know what they are doing as most of them have been doing it for years and know where to look. Sounds like you got a bit of a knob of a tester.
I ALWAYS take my cars and friends cars to tony smithee in wisbech i normally get the older chap with a beard he is very fair, strict but not overly strict and a very nice chap. Cheap too £25 for an mot and 1 free retest.

| you could always take it to Tinkler Bros in Ramsey...they MOT satation they take theirs too are fair And speaking of Danny Allen you can hardly knock his work (judging from the standard of cars he turns out)...so why take the piss out of his business name? And if it wasn't for someone like him then shows like Gti Spring Festival wouldn't run quite so smoothly! | |

| Surely if they can put a screwdriver through the sill, it would indicate the sill is rusty enough to warrant a failure and need work done to it? or is there some lean way on this part of the MOT? I went somewhere last year who did a £25 MOT and they were definitely dodge, tried giving me £300 worth of work for stuff I'd had done a couple of months before the test. Turned out it needed a new front o/s strut and it passed with flying colours.. never did follow that up with VOSA I would rather a genuine place fail the car and need to get things fixed so I have the knowledge my car really is safe for the road, although it's always nice to have a pass without any problems | |
