is it a wax choke?

if it is, i bet its that, they love playing up

maybe worth upgrading the carb to a peiburg or however you spell it, you can get them for about £30-£40

actually, have you cleaned the carb out recently?

if not, pop into halfords and get a can of carb cleaner for about £3

works wonders

Would that be a 1.4 mk3 GOLF ?

If so that CARB (!)would be a single point injection unit and cleaning it will help but it sounds like an air leak. imo
