PostSubject: project--rustowagen mk1 caddy   project--rustowagen mk1 caddy EmptyTue Aug 26 2008, 21:18

dad got this caddy nearly a year ago, it sat in the garden for most of the time and got put in the garage about 4 months ago after we finished my grey caddy. as im planning on striping my grey caddy again i need a new daily so i bought this caddt off of dad. only been working on her for about 2 weeks now but seem to be getting a fair bit done. dont really have any big plans, on a fairly tight budget with this one as im trying to put as money money as possible aside for my grey caddy.
i already have most of the parts to get this project going, not planning on making it much of a show piece, but still want something i can take to shows and not be afraid to park it in the corner.
anyway, time for some piks. most of the work has been in and around the bed area, as it was outside for so long it was covered in sureface rust, spend a hole 4 hours grinding it off with a wire wheel, then rust treated, etch primered and how it is now in white primer. also ground back all the rust on the sidewalls of the bed and done done the same steps as with the bed floor.

project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy040
and then moved onto the right side before rolising i had no primer left lol
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy041
then moved onto the bulkhead, this was in quite a state, decided it would be easyest to just cut it out and start again, when i came home from riding on saturday, one of dads mates had been over and cut the old one out, and made a t25 bulkhead fit into the place. was quite suprised how good it looked!

and now after rubbing down the filler and more slapped on
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy026
also the 4 holes along te bed rails got welded up and a quick skim of filler on. aswell as all the small holes in the bed sidewalls, havent yet put anyfiller on them tho, just some red oxide to stop the rust.

also removed the rear number plate holder and ground the rust off, rust treated and primed but didnt have any life left in the camera when i done it.
keep your eyes out for more updates shortly Very Happy

tonights progess...
...rushed home from work to get sanding and working away before i lost the light at around 8. so got a couple of god hours of work in. most of which i was sanding the rear bulkhead as i put a fair amount of filler on, still needs more but defo looks better than it did yesterday.
also got some other dents down the side filled and sanded and primered. progress looks fairly minimal but im happy with it so far ^_^
all comments welcome guys
after a just and hour of sanding
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy043
primed bare metal
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy044
high build primer, still a fair bit to do, loads of little dents and a fair few pin holes everywhere.
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy046
right side, few of the bigger dents filled.
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy047
bare metal primed
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy048
high build primer (paint was still wet when i took the picture so it looks rather ropey)
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy051
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy050
then the left side, couple of dents filled sanded and primed. still got a fair bit todo this side, ran out of time tonight so hopefuly get this side done when i next get some free time.

more progress over the last week, more sanding, filling, priming and more high build primer, (the high build was still wet when i took the piks so it does look a little strange) will let the piks do the talking. :thumbs_up

come back off holiday a week early, so have a fair bit of time to work on my caddy number 2 Razz got a fair bit done in the last couple of days but nothing worth taking many picks of as ive just been constantly filling and sanding. nearly there with te drivers side now tho so finaly making good progress. got a few piks to keep you guys going, will be more updates daily for the next few days...hope you like...all comments welcome good or bad....

filler anyone Razz

project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy070
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy074

more sanding and filling, now in primer but i forgot to take a pik.
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy071

rear bulkhead guid coat flatted down and MORE FILLER tongue
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy075

dent in the roof taken care of
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy076

other little dents filled along the top of the rear window.
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy077

drivers side stone chip/underseal removed aswel as the trim clips, going to weld the holes up tomorrow then fill a dent, then all ready to be re-stone chipped.
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy072

also removed the stone chip on the rear of the quater as the original paint was pealing off so i thought it would be easy to grind down and start again.
project--rustowagen mk1 caddy Thewhitecaddy073

also drew up am idea for some door signs, keeping with the rustowagen theme, will only say "vw specialists" underneath the restowagen when i paint them on tho. also not decided on colours for the letters and drop shadow yet so any ideas are welcome.

got a fiar bit done again today, had a slight problem involving the grinder taking a chunk out of the top of my fingure which was quite a shock, managed to take part of the top ofmy nail off then all the way over the top and back down the otherside Suspect kinda put a stop to things as i had to quickly go to the doctors tongue

anyways still managed to carry on when i got back, the drivers side is pretty much finished now, just got a bit of filler to rub down along the top of the wheel arch. and even managed to get some stone chip in a can from halfords yesterday so also got that on before i had to pack up for the day.

got a little bit done on the passenger side rear quater, is much strighter than the drivers side to start with so hanst needed much work so far, but still need to grind back the old stone chip as its also flacking and redo it. any way here is some piks from through out the day. comments please peeps

also managed to sort one of the wheel arches out, hamered them out from the inside of the tub, didnt turn out to bad. not sure if im going to put filler on them or just leave them as they are? they now are in primer but i forgot to take a pik.
