Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Empty
PostSubject: Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon   Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon EmptySat May 01 2010, 17:51

Bought this yesterday from Lance's girlfriend as a project until I can learn to drive next July..

It's a 1989 1.3 Polo Saloon, 111000 miles on the clock, 5 speed gearbox in overall good condition Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_lol

Plans are to make it as mint and original as possible, it has quite a few little bits of rust which need fixing and the odd bit needs tweaking inside, but all being well this should be a minter by next year.

I'll let the pics do the talking, sorry they're so big, not sure how to make them smaller but oh well Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon 298631

Seems to be missing part of the air intake, I don't think it will be too hard to fix it back to original

Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon SDC10778

This is the worst bit of rust I've found so far, on the drivers side door shut

Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon SDC10775

And here alongside the boot lid

Also planning on putting some decent speakers and a sub by next year too, but that will come last

Should be a good first car to learn in Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_cheers

I'm hoping to do something to the car every weekend atleast, should mean i can get a lot done this summer

Today I started looking for rust under and around the front bumper area, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Firstly, I removed the bumper which took about an hour as the bolts were in the most awkward position and didn't realise the bumper would come off easier if i unbolted the bumper irons from behind Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_mad. As you can see there is rust just below where the grill would be
positioned.

After a few minuites of scrubbing , the front end of the car looked a whole lot better Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_biggrin

I was going to sand down, filler then primer the rust part, but then it started raining. Again. Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_cry So I'm putting it off until I know it's not going to rain

For now I'm going to get the bumper irons and support shot blasted, then rattle can them black

Oh and also found a pair of center caps for the steelies Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon 460227

Slow progress, but it'll be worth it once it stops raining for more than an hour Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_lol

I think it looks nice bumperless too, but the plan is to keep the car "standard" . Although I do like the sound of chrome bumpers , trim etc Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon 51732

Tidy motor mate, looks like you've got a year to sort everything out and make it mint!

Sorry about the slow updates, just havn't had the time lately Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon 298631

I've removed all of the trim and both bumpers, only to find that the sills rear arch's have gone beyond repair. The O/S wing also needs re-placing and re-painting Jon's 1989 Polo Saloon Icon_mad

I've also repaired quite a few little bits of rust while I wait for the new sills, rear arch's and O/S wing to be delivered.

Pictures of the progress -

So this is how the car stands at the moment. Once the arch's and sill's have arrived they will be welded into place and the essential areas will be sprayed in Stratos Blue Metallic (LA5Z).
