Well if you go for something bigger then you'll need the gearbox to suit the new engine. As your car is carbed, maybe stick to something else thats carbed like a 1.6 or 1.8. To be honest though, you could pick another mk2 up with a bigger engine for about the same as buying seperate parts(engine, box, loom etc). Doing a conversion to the mk2 pictured in your avater would'nt be cost affective IMO mate. Save a few hundred quid and buy another car thats running right then fit your wheels and suspension over to it

| but im guessin you want to keep your project car...due to the amount of time and effort youve put into it.
a question that needs answering is; does a 1.6 or 1.8 driver engine drop straight in? or do you have to swap looms etc???
a carbed engine would be the easiest due not having to route fuel lines etc etc for a gti engine.

| any small block engine will bolt straight in, so the biggest you could go to easily would be a skoda 1.6 engine, or some mk3s came with a small block 1.6, they are common polo conversions, polo GT engine might be a good one for you as its still a 1.3 but you will get multi point injection etc or even better would be a 1.4 from a mk3 on polo gt management, loom and injection setup, possible to make 100hp relatively easy 8k rev limit for fun revs and almost gti power from a little 1.4. Good times. | |
