US STYLE FRONT BUMPER

US style front bumper
If you're after a cheap alternative and want one it to match ya back bumper try this.
First off you will need:
a front and back mk2 small bumper
a grinder with cutting disc
a soldering iron
a sharp knife
some screws and driver
plastic filler
stopper
a tin of adhesion aid,plastic primer filler,bumper tex and some mat or semi mat paint

and also some source of heat (i used a hair drier)
now you need to mark out the back bumper ( leaving luges on either side )and then split it from the bumper bar and cut the middle section out







now cut the bottom half of the number recess off the front one


on the back of the middle section of the back bumper there is a lot of plastic used to strengthen it so it will need to be cut away


no the recess of the front bumper i used screws to stop the back section from flexing when fixed

now the middle section needs trimmed to fit



to fix the middle bit i used some of the left over plastic i had left over and used it with a soldering iron as soldier




when it is all fixed i then gave it a good keying for the filler and then rubbed it down and give it a going over with the stopper and flattened off again

now apply the adhesion aid then primer then flatting off and tex coat the bumper when it is dry you can then paint






stand back and admire jobs a good 'un

good job there guy! this will be very useful if anyones planning to do it

I must admit that that isnt my handy work as I am a very messy worker which is why I need a work shop, I cant be trusted near the garden furniture and that includes sitting on them let alone having it to work on car stuff with !! ( i use the coffe or kitchen table for that !!)(and dont even dare ask about what i've put in the dish washer before)

i did that to my front bumper about 7 years ago, i even used the rear bumper to fill the gap in the front the same. looks good on any mk2 golf.

Good post....can use the same principals on mk3 bumpers i hope!!


I can see no reason as why not !
When yo fill a mk3 bumper the best filler to use is made by upol, one of them is perticularly flexible and up to the job.
