low revs = stall

a mate of mines got a MK2 1.6 Golf and their are a few things wrong with it, he told me that when stopping at traffic lights it stalls unless you keep the revs up (around 3000 or 4000), anyone know what this could be and if its serious or not? the engines done around 80,000 miles.

i should be going to get it from him wednesday depending on what im told?

a friend of mine said it might be the carburetor needs setting up or something?

start off with checking the fuel and air filters i would replace them as they are relatively cheap. if its doing it still after that take the carb off and clean it out with some carb vleaner available from halfords etc should do the trick.

give the engine a good service if needed will run way better

but could be the carb need setting, the standard carbs are poop

it was the carb, in a really bad state!
few little bits just need doing and it should be running sweet as a nut.
