Hi, Ok so a bit of backround firstly, Having got the camping bug a few years ago, we found ourselves in Newquay, where it appears people only seem to drive Vdub vans. Having seen what could be done and to be frank how amazingly cool they looked I wanted one. I told my Wife and that was that, it was on the list of things we want but couldn't afford.
Times change and as my Wife was given a company car (VWdub Passat- VWdub family), this meant her Saab Convertible could go to finance the T4. Luckily she loves the van as much as I do and given that our camping equiptment grows every year, it was a very welcoming solution to the " where there hell is that gonna go conversation we have every year"
Big thanks to Supa78, who after a frantic phone call came on our road trip to Barnsley to see what was essentially a red T4 panel van ( luckily the vision in my head saw past that
.
Ok So..... What I have is a 2.5TDI, 130000 miles on the clock, ran really well, and the previous owner had forked out for a respray, (nice of them!)
This is how it was when we picked it up.
It was really the perfect base to start working on, and had a really long list of things which I wanted to do, Having searched for various parts on Flea bay, I came across Unique Campers in St Neots, They took care of the 2 side windows, the rear tailgate window and lowered the suspensiion,
I would love to say that I done it all myself, but if i had it would be on it's way to the nearest breakers by now as my skills are that of a deformed carrot, but hey at least i'm honest
I done a bit of trawling around Flea bay and found a set of 18" Torras, having got a bit stuck with the usual "what size should I fit" issue, I really liked these and thought they would look really nice when in place... I then read about the whole, can I can't put car wheels on a van, in the end I thought sod it as van wheels are to pricey, I also thought these are different to Audi rims which are the more common wheel, understanable as they are nice rims. I called on the assistance of Supa78 again ( it's good having a brother that know's what he's doing
) he gave the arches a look over and sorted any rust, which luckily was at a minimum. After a fraught session of trying to get the steelies off, thanks to some bloddy rusty bolts, we discovered I was missing 2 spigot rings!
, another vist to my favorite auction site and they were in the post.
Eventually have found the time I got the wheels on, and I think they look good, could possibly do with a referb, but at the moment they'll do.
This is how it looked after the work had been carried out....
I had a few ideas for what else I wanted to do, firstly had to have the clear indicator lenses
I went for the half clear rear lights as they match the front nicely.
I have a few graphics in mind, the first 2 I bought were animal, I originally wanted these to run diagonally front to back, but they were too small, so I opted for the bottom of the door, I have one more for the other side but haven't got that fitted yet.
Rear Window was next
I still have more to do, and will add these as and when I have them.
Next up was the bonnet bra, I went for the plain black one. I fitted this last saturday, and at least it keeps the bird crap off my bonnet!!
As for inside, I opted for the day van look as I still wanted to have a functioning van, I was offered a r & r bed but that isn't the direction i was going in,
The van came with a double seat in the back
This was no good as there was no seatbelt, pc plod wouldn't approve i'm sure, I found these seats on flea bay not bad for £70
While the van was with Unique Campers they also fully carpeted and vinyled the floor, fitted some led roof lighting, they done a brilliant job and I would defo recommend them.
Love how these look at night!!
Very tidy job done.
With the seats and a table fitted, it's all looking good
The van came with a JVC head unit and multichanger which rattled around under the seat, with the help of Supa78, the van now has a new (to me ) Sony head unit which I plug my ipod too, and a nice set of 6 x 9s inder the front seats.
There is still a lot too do, I was looking to get the seats covered, but as there not that comfortable anyway, I'm looking to replace them, I'm looking for leather seats with armrests, any ideas
, the plan is to get the rear seats reupholstered to match.
So that's it for now I will update this as and when, roll on spring!!
