| My cousin has one, his is an auto, its only used in london and he has the ac on all the time.
Its as powerful as an early vr6 in a heavier shell.
Its a great car, generally well specced but the down side is they normally worth next to nothing and its the mk4 platform and it'll s**t itself often if its not been dealer maintained throughout its life.

| I just got back from looking at one in London. It was a metallic grey '02 plate V5 3-door MK4 Golf. Pretty tidy and engine seemed nice and healthy, but for the power output they do lack (probably due to weight).
I intended on a V6 4-motion but my insurance won't touch me (it breaks the magical under 25 over 200bhp "no-no" barrier. Gash). The V5 was just an alternative for the 1.8T really. For those who wanted a nice smooth pulling engine as opposed to a revvy tuneable engine.
1.8T or V6 really. With the extra weight of the Passat (i'm assuming its a B5/B5.5?), I'd say PD130 or V6.

As compared to what Matty ? LOL You can drive an M3 more economically than a prius, so on that premise If you drive it like an old man its pretty good, if you drive it like you stole it you'll be very friendly with your local forcourt cashier. It is often referred to as under powered compared to the 4motion 24v vr6 which side by side to a good obd2 vr6 will also feel sedentary. Ultimately the v5 is should we say not everyones cup of tea.

They are £20 in the tank without brimming and re-brimming it, so I can't tell you what I got. But it was closer to the official 'urban' figure of 22.8mpg than the 'extra-urban' of 42.8, or even the combined figure of 32.5. If anything, the handling is better than the original V5. It certainly feels more meaty and responsive through the steering wheel. 0-60 is a less-impressive-on-paper eight seconds Because the fly-by-wire throttle linkage is more than a little immediate it accelerates a little too quickly to match the smoothness of the engine, if that makes sense

| based on that then its very bad on fuel for what it is. my M3 manages better than that on average, thats twice the power and nearly a litre bigger. | |

| Is that as there is a lack of 'feel' to the throttle, the dbw throttles on the 1.8t also suffered (more so the earlyones) with what was termed as 'throttle lag' jabbasport apperently dialed this out.

Yeah it doesnt feel controlled enough and if you heavy footed like me kinda hammer it which feels odd on the engine as it drives so nice

The earlier V5's are 150bhp, '02 plate onwards are 170bhp. I don't know if there's much difference in the feel of the drive though. But I wasn't that impressed with the 170bhp version to be honest. Good thing is they're spec'd up quite well as standard (climatronic, sports seats..)
