Start at the begining Andy,

1. check you have decent compression, a cheap tester is fine (about £15)
It should be 140+ psi evenly across the cylinders.

2. Check your timing, line the marks up on the pulleys.
The bottom crank pulley co-insides with the auxilery shaft pulley mark and the cam shaft pulley should be straight up (90 degrees to head) or the inside mark is level with the head. (i'll see if I have a pic of this and post it for you) the rotar arm should line up centraly with the mark in the dizzy housing.

3. If these are ok then its time to check your leads, fuel delivery and afm.
Check the condition of your leads, get someone to spin the engine, listen to see if they are shorting to ground (cracking noise), pull the main fuel feed pipe from the fuel rail and put the ignition on for half a second, it should prime the pump and fuel gush from the pipe(dont do this with a hot engine), if fuel comes good, if not -bad. remove the top of the air filter box and inspect the air flow meter moves freely back and forth and isnt stuck. (it may still be buggered but you can just unplug it and it'll default and run anyway)

4.clean and regap your plugs.

Oh.

I forgot to add inspect the rotor arm, carefully cleaning it if it's dirty (or replace) check the dizzy cap too as these often have hairline cracks (replace)

Check the condition of the plug and wires to the dizzy.
Hall senders break down on these regular as clockwork.
If it's still not started I'll post you how to check the hall sender with a light bulb.
Follow the wiring up to the scuttle panel and check the connection to the ignition amp.
Check your scuttle isn't full of leaves and water.

I would check that all of these things are correct before even plugging it in to vagcom,
If the basics ain't right it ain't gonna fire anyway.

My thoughts are these,

Timing
Fuel pump (maybe ECM or relay)
Hall sender/amp

These are solid engines and it's normally something daft stopping it from starting.
If you have fuel, air and a spark delivered at the correct time it'll go.

Timing pics to follow
