The golf is up for mot on the 6th of feb, I have booked it in for this thursday. If it fails on Thursday does that void the rest of the mot? Or will it still be legal until the 6th of feb?

Will be voided if it fails mate, as its a test of road worthyness.

about 4 different testing stations. I always put my cars in early so i can carry on using them if they fail. I always get given the old pass certificate back and told its fine to continue on the old MOT.

Ah fair enough. but i thought seeing as its all computerised now, the fail would go through redering the car un roadworthy, regardless if its got couple days MOT left or a whole year. Logic would say that anyway.

yeah i always thought that but thats why your allowed to do it only 1 month prior to the expiry. In this day an age if they took that away and somebodys car failed they could be out of work for a week or so etc while its repaired.

I think if its a major major fail on something rendering the vehicle dangerous and it gets the **dangerous** marker next to it THAT renders the vehicle unroadworthy and overwrites the old MOT. Dont forget though you could pull out of a MOT station with your fresh pass certificate, get a vosa inspection and have it removed. MOT isnt neccesarily a test of roadworthiness just more basic safety.

I'm pretty sure by technicality it's illegal to continue using a car that has just failed it's mot but the law becomes very unclear around the subject. Basically if you get pulled it's in the hands of the copper whether he wants to charge you or not but I highly doubt they will.

If the mot says 6th feb then it runs out 6th of Feb. period.
If it passes tomorrow you can add the time on top of the current mot so it follows that if it fails then the current mot is still in force.

Tiz is right as are the two mot testers i count as Good friends.

My mate and I had a discussion about this, but I still didnt understand exactly, however he said that when a car fails an mot there is a code of some description that indicates a level of 'hazard' and if it falls at a certain level it fails full stop. And if not its valid till the original expiry date confused I assume thats roughly what Tiz is saying also?

Im off to do some googling.

As stated you will not get done for no mot as you still have the existing mot, for instance your tyre may wear down 3 months into a new mot, which wouldnt invalidate that mot even though it wouldnt pass a new one.

yeah unless your brakes are hanging off and suspensions gone through the strut tops etc your fine to carry on using it but if it was a major hazzard then it would be deemed unroadworthy.

As it states on a m.o.t form TO PRESERVE YOUR M.O.T mot it between if you do so between those dates it doesnt void it i know that as mk2 was put in before n failed but between them is the clear window which gives you 28 days between mot n aniversay expiry to get work fixed hope that helps mark
