Good
Good MPG in comparison to other E36 Coupe's
All E36 Coupe's have interchangeable parts (seats, bumpers, interior panels etc) so can be made into an M3 look-a-like.
Usually have very low mileage as not a desired engine model.
The engines in the 316 and 318 are pretty solid and don't suffer from the dreaded 'Nikasil Block' failure.
Bad
It's a 4cylinder so the engine won't be refined (which is what BMW is known for).
It'll sound like rummaging change through your pocket.
0-60 in over 12 seconds. That's slower than a 1.1 Saxo (which has over 50bhp less).
Harder to sell on (just look at PH - flooded with 316's and 318's).
For a sporty shaped car, it'll feel extremely slow.
Almost all 316's came with the most basic package from the factory. Hardly any extras.
You won't get any benefit from the RWD (small engine + heavy car + RWD =
).
You might be better off looking at the 316 Compact's.
They aren't too shabby performance-wise in comparison (0-60 in 11 seconds) and the hatchback is far more practical.
I think later Compact's had Turbo's but I can't guarantee that.
Anyway, personally I'd steer clear.
