After the scumbags stole my HU, I'm gonna put the mk4 golf unit in, but all the wires are ripped to sh*t. So I need a wiring diagram or a list of what wires are what so I can re-wire the lot. Can anyone help?

It would be helpful to know what car you're planning on putting the MK4 headunit in.

Ok, so you're putting a MK4 golf headunit into a MK2 Golf, right?

Car Wiring
In that case click the link underneath...
http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/VW-Wiring.pdf

In this PDF, your car SHOULD comply by the 'Harness Colour Codes 2' section.
The 'Harness Colour Codes 1' section is for cars made MK3 Golf onwards.
So Section 2 should help you out in identifying the wiring in the Car.

Headunit Wiring
HU help Vw-mkiv-premium-radio-diagram

Following this image, the relevant points on the headunit that serve each purpose are written out below...

Plug #3
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Plug #3, Pin #7
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Plug #3, Pin #4
Car Radio Ground Wire: Plug #3, Pin #8
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Plug #3, Pin #6

Plug #2
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Plug #2, Pin #5
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Plug #2, Pin #6
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Plug #2, Pin #3
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Plug #2, Pin #4

Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Plug #2, Pin #7
Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Plug #2, Pin #8
Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Plug #2, Pin #1
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Plug #2, Pin #2

So once you've found the correct wire and matching location, it's just a matter of wiring it up and trying it out.
For example (and to get you started)...

[X] THE WIRE IN YOUR CAR. REFER TO THE PDF FOR WHICH WIRE.
Which matches up to
[Y] THE PLUG ON THE BACK OF THE HEADUNIT. REFER TO DIAGRAM AND PLUG DETAILS.

Which in theory becomes....

[X] Left front speaker negative wire (-) = BROWN w/ BLUE stripe
Which matches up to
[Y] Plug #2, Pin #6

It's very unlikely you'll need the following details, but here they are so that you know what the other pins on the plugs do...

Plug #1

CD Changer Data In Wire: Plug #1, Pin #13
CD Changer Data Out Wire: Plug #1, Pin #14
CD Changer Clock Wire: Plug #1, Pin #15
CD Changer Constant Battery 12v+ Wire: Plug #1, Pin #16
CD Changer Control Signal Wire: Plug #1, Pin #17
CD Changer Ground Wire: Plug #1, Pin #18
CD Changer Left Line Out Wire: Plug #1, Pin #19
CD Changer Right Line Out Wire: Plug #1, Pin #20

Plug #3
Signal for Anti-Theft Alarm System Wire: Plug #3, Pin #1
Data Link Connector (DLC) K-Wire: Plug #3, Pin #3
Battery Supply Constant 12v+ Wire for Anti-Theft System (SAFE): Plug #3,
Pin #5

Hopefully this will help in getting the stereo wired up successfully to your car! HU help Icon_cheers

looks very helpful mate thanks. I'l have a go on saturday. I did find that pdf link you've posted and I've managed to identify most of the cars wiring, but the mk4 golf tape player isn't turning on, so I guess the universal iso connector has its constant live on the wrong pin HU help Icon_rolleyes

Bingo mate. Sorry I forgot to add that. Dont have a VW anymore so forgot that the red/yellow wires need to be switched around.
Thats one of the things that peeves me about VW's. All other cars are wired the same with the Constant Live and the Ignition Live wires connected correctly. Only VW/Audi could be awkward and wire these two up the other way around... HU help Icon_rolleyes

*EDIT* - Let me know how you get on with this by the way. Always intrigued to find out as to whether my advice actually helps or not! HU help Icon_lol

Sorry to hijack...but the headunit i put in chazs polo always goes back to track 1 and the radio when you take the key out, as thought its been unplugged. might this be due the them wires being the wrong way round?

If it doesnt remember anything (the radio stations dont get saved when you turn the car on/off, the cd doesnt remember which track it left off on, head unit colours/volume arent the same), then this'll be the cause Matty.

Switch the red and yellow wires around so you have the following...

CAR <---> HEADUNIT
CAR <---> HEADUNIT

This *SHOULD* solve that problem.
If it's been re-wired before without an ISO harness being fitted correctly, then this might not apply (seen a car where some tard changed all the wiring to grey. muppet).

Lemme know if that helps.

Stampers... yes your post would have been helpful if I hadn't already found that link before you posted it HU help Icon_razz

But tbh I think it should be a sticky thread, I've had no end of dubs with butchered HU wiring and I think some other members could benefit from it!

I found I had to swap the constant live (yellow) with the power aeiral wire (blue) on the back of the mk4 golf unit funnily enough. But in general I've also found VW's always need the switched live and constant live swapping.
