Chrunchy MK4 Gearbox

Hi guy's, my Anni has developed a nasty crunch when I go into 3rd gear at 4000 rpm or above. It sounds similar to if you miss the gear and bring the clutch up to soon.

I've noticed if you hold it in neutral for a second or so then go for 3rd it's ok, but who wants to do that?!

I'm having to keep the revs low and drive like miss daisy!

Sounds expensive! Any ideas?

hi you need a new clutch ,common problem on these. you need a clutch kit this should include a new fly wheel, thrust bearing, clutch plate. i dout very much that the synchromesh has gone check the clutch 1st

Really? Clutch doesn't slip or anything and only does it with third gear which is why I figured it was a gear box issue.

i would say synchromesh tbh or have you checked the oil level?

yeah you would think straight away gearbox but dont rule out the clutch get that checked 1st, i have seen many a mk4 suffer from this as i worked for vw for 5years. if the clutch is ok then you are looking at £500 for an exchange box. this chap builds gearboxes stronger and cheaper than vw, he is in wolverhampton brum 07974458308 name is ian. hope this helps
