| I've recently purchased a Mk2 3 door GTi with the big bumpers, unfortunately it came with standard suspension and 17" alloys with 205 40 tyres on and as a result puts my old landrover to shame in respect of ground clearance.
At the minute I can't afford to change the wheels for the ones I want so was thinking about lowering it on the current wheels, does any one know how far I can go before having rubbing issues, oh and I don't want to have to fork out for arch work either.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers | |

| I'd get some pics up if you can Gives people a little more clue on where the wheels sit now etc, plus offsets if you know them? I'm imagine you could go down quite a lot - are you planning on using coilovers or springs/shocks? | |

| With them tyres youll be abit limited, asweel as you say you dont wanna do any arch work. youll prob get away with 40oddmm from them pics but if i was you id get some cheap coilies and you can adjust it to suit. | |

| I was thinking 35mm would be about it. I need to use it a fair bit as it's my daily so when I get round to putting some 15's on it I wouldn't be going any lower then that any way. Sawtry is speed bump hell.....
I might just stick some springs on there as that's what I want to drop it any way and if they rub I'll go back to where I was and wait till I can afford the wheels. I just have to learn to be more patient. | |

| If when you get your 15s, choose the right tyre and you shoudl be able to have plenty lows without any rubbing issues anyway | |

| It's more the splitter and sump on these stupid little mound type speed bumps we have round here where your wheels straddle them and every thing underneath gets ripped off. | |

| Too true, the problem is I've lived here all my life and every car I've ever had cleared them, I just know one day I'll forget myself and leave my sump at the co-op I know I should be patient, save for the wheels I want and some coilovers and the bra I want and the stereo and all the other stuff but it's just not in my nature | |

| yeah get some coilovers, hot tuning ones are cheap and are alright, i got mine for 160 on ebay and mk2/mk3 are the same, this shop sells em on there. plus then you wont have to spend more on new springs when the arch gap opens up when u get 15s | |
