PostSubject: Chugga - mk1 caddy   Chugga - mk1 caddy EmptyTue Mar 18 2008, 23:15

Ladies and Gentleman...let us introduce Mr Bruce Chugga, 24yr old Volkswagen Mk1 Caddy

Bought from a chap in Reading, the adventure started with a long slow drive back to Manchester

Chugga - mk1 caddy IMGP0180
Chugga - mk1 caddy DSC_0353

Slow progress...
picked up some bling in the form of a chrome trim grille and treated him to some brand new eyes, the previous lamps were pretty dead

Chugga - mk1 caddy DSC_0736

some time later...

Chugga - mk1 caddy DSC_0826

New Shoes...
Out with the 15" wheels and in with the 13" ATS classics painted in gloss black with
polished detailing...clad in some 175/50 Yoko rubber

Chugga - mk1 caddy THEwheels

More bling...
Chrome front bumper - new old stock

Chugga - mk1 caddy DSC_0002

a couple of hours work and the bumper is starting to look decent...

Chugga - mk1 caddy DSC_0587

neglected for a few weeks...
grumpy at being left alone - the battery went flat...sisters 'bug to the rescue!

Chugga - mk1 caddy Image040

New clothes...
a sneaky look at what to expect soon...new paint colour for the new-look Chugga

Chugga - mk1 caddy DSC_0609

Also have two replacement doors & 2 new wings to fit...should be good as new Smile

Cheers
JK

That chromie bumper will need modding to fit i believe mate as its for a mk1 polo, not golf.

Looks like a good straight truck and cant wait to see it with new paint Cool

Nice caddy,  I like it how it is at the moment! The red colour looks nice aswell though. You missed the all important bed shot of the caddy too is it good condition?

May be interested in the sebrings too if you get fed up with them.

Yeh tom - think the Sebrings will be going - tho the tyres are completely dead. was gonna refurb em - but will give u a shout if ur interested.

heres a bed shot - no massive rot, just a wee bit of surface stuff - its solid tho...small wave in it towards the cab for some reason

In other news...I dropped off the bumper @ a detailers today - he's gonna get the machine on it and restore it to it's former glory...so that should be interesting to see how well that comes up!

Righty, just got finished with J.A.Kelly's engine conversion. 4 of the hardest working days i have ever done to get it done in time haha. most nights was out till 10-11pm from 7 in the morning and finally finished it tuesday night around 7:30 PM all buttoned up and how she should be. I took a few pics along the way but no complete pics as i finished it with moments to spare but im sure he will update with those Very Happy.

Weather outside was amazing so decided to work on it outside.

Time to get that tired, leaking old diesel lump out
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

After adapting a load of things and changing all the mounts over putting the GTD lump in the bay

Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

The reason you cant use the standard mk2 downpipe mated to the toiletbowel standard thingy
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

Intercooler mounting time(this is bloody tight in the mk1 engine bay but looks factory cool when its done(need final pics Very Happy)
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

Brackets used to mount(welds and edges were later tidied up and painted, they look rather good)
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

Due to the extra distance away from the inlet because of the master cylinder the pipes need lengthening
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

Downpipe off
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

New downpipe fabricated from a golf mk3 TD downpipe as its steel and not cast iron, takes quite a bit of modification, i think dressed a few of the welds and heatwrapped it. This all mates up to the standard 1.6D system and sounds very good all you can hear is whistling and a tiny bit of exhaust noise doesnt sound like a tractor at all. Kept the flexi pipe in it as well(you can see the bulge)
Chugga - mk1 caddy Pbucket

After that was all done i then modified the brake caliper carriers so the ATS classics could fit on the front without the use of spacers.

Now where are those complete pics pirat

I'll get the finished pics up tonight...i've gotta take some!

Do miss the donor golf - but its all worked out well!! Just the paintwork to go now...that might take a while tho...hoping to have it all ready and completed by this time next month

Tiz did an amazing job - and as good as factory finish too. Top bloke, highly recomended!

Cheers

Load-liner - bed is good, but liner looks cleaner (or will!)

Sneaky peak at the future colour...hopefully better (sprayed from Halfords can!)

That has to be the perfect engine to put in a caddy imo. This way i bet you didnt have to mess about changing fuel tanks.

You dont need to change tanks with any conversion really tom. Caddy tanks are gravity fed so its basically just a case of mounting a fuel pump after it Wink

Agree though that the TD/GTD is the easiest conversion to do in a mk1 caddy. Only major mod is to make up a downpipe but these are starting to come out into production due to popularity!.

If i come accross a TD or GTD lump myself, i may just do the conversion with another mk1 caddy myself Very Happy

it took me more time to mount the intercooler than it did to make the downpipe but it is very very tight in the mk1 bay especially when the master cylinder is right in the way but i managed to make it mount just right using the mk2 reservoir tank. Mk3 TD downpipe is very easy to mod as its steel so you can cut and turn it to get it just right, i made this system mate to the standard exhaust which isnt much good for over 130bhp but its 1)replaceable 2) very quiet

I am not sure but i think gibber was the only other person to mount the GTD cooler in the bay effectively? I have seen a couple others but using no ducts and no shrouds so they would be worse than having no cooler at all.

With regards to tanks the part number for the petrol tank and the diesel tank is exactly the same if you convert from petrol to diesel you just need to wash out the tank with warm soapy water to get all the crap out then wash it around with red diesel(cause its cheap and your effectively throwing it away). Fill the diesel tank to the brim with fresh white diesel and she will sort herself out.

Quick update with some less than decent photos from my phone!

Front end is off, new front panel fitted, and wings to go on later. New tail-light section (as old one was damaged) and some work taken place to tidy up the tailgate

Chugga - mk1 caddy Image014
Chugga - mk1 caddy Image015
Chugga - mk1 caddy Image012

Since these pics were taken, the rear arches have been replaced with new panel sections (jetta/5door golf part). and the section under the rear window has been grinded back, & treated

Wish i could get some decent pics, but the truck is back in Manchester at a bodyshop there

Comments welcome
Cheers
