| how hard is it? the polo 16v gearboxes are made of chocolate, mines ok at the mo, but im thinking of getting another one, ready for when this one does die, and rebuilding it myself to keep the cost down. am i way out of my depth with this plan? cheers | |

| if im honest i would tackle EVERYthing else.... but it hasnt even crossed my mind to rebuild a gearbox they aren't that complicated inside but tbh it doesnt cost a massive amount to have professionals done. But why rebuild the box? Why not just buy a good box when if yours goes? | |

i want to have a spare one that i know is good so when mine does go i can swap it over "quickly". saves time finding one and not knowing how long it would last. | |

| Some gearboxes reuire parts being heated or frozen to enable the shafts to slide back into place! Not sure about the polo boxes tho. | |

| the week point is the bearing on the pinion shaft nr diff as when gearbox oil is not topped up or changed this bearing does not get enough oil causing it to fail which throws bits into diff with the end resuilt is one fooooked gearbox !!! so not made of chocolate just poor maintance !!!!! | |

| It may well be down to poor maintainence but i always here of polo gearboxes failing on the 16v and 8v models. I think its a good idea finding one as a spare. Its sods law i bet when you need one there won't be one available. Not sure how hard they are to work on so i would personally leave it to the proffessionals to refurb it if needs be. | |
