Bearings wouldn't usually be too tight from my recollection G but I could well be wrong. Have you thought of asking the one like Toby? He is usually good with that stuff after all. Failing that, how about on an MR2 forum as they may have experience with the job?

15 stone standing on the end of a 3 foot bar would be 630ft-lb

You would want to be standing on the end of a 0.75 foot long bar to get roughly 157ft-lb but its not overly accurate.

i know the torque settings which are very tight but without a wrench. these aren't tapered bearings
