PostSubject: Disc sizes   Thu Oct 15 2009, 13:50

Very quick one, I have a 1991 Golf GTi 8V and was trying to order some new front disc for it, but I don't know if I need 239mm or 256mm as I've read different views and can't get to the car right now to measure them.

Cheers for any help

Stuart

just seen from your avatar its a J plate. You have whats known as a "parts bin car" haha whatever was left in the parts bin got put on j plates as it was the end of the run. So whenever ordering parts dude your best to just measure up and check first.

tbh mate its unlikely that you have 256s, every single 8v i have took apart have 239mm brakes. If your caliper carriers are cast into the hub they are 239, if you look round the back and it can be taken off with 2 17(iirc?)mm bolts then they are 256s or bigger. But id bet youve got 239s.

just to throw it off a little more, even if the calipers come in two parts this doesn't mean that they are 256, the later 8v's still had 239's but utilised a 16v hub and had a different carrier.
Either way, if you have two part hubs with with carriers and you want to upgrade I have a set of 256mm carriers here you could have for a few sheckles.
Best bet is to remove the wheel and measure them.
If they are 239s then all well and good if they are 256's then you've saved yourself a load of grief.

IHTH.

i don't know much either Smile We need to get the head off your car and we can start on porting/polishing...then nice free flowing exhaust manifold/exhaust...then a cam would be worth it Smile

That's all in the to do list mate, although I need the car running so might get a second hand head to do the work on and then swap it over. Would like then, as you say, to fit new exhaust including manifold, filter and cam then uprate the clutch. Hopefully get her up to 150+ bhp so it'll have the same power to weight as the Saab and lower geared.

150 brake is possible on the 1.8 engine but it is a struggle and you will spend a lot of money trying to achieve it.

you will need......

Wild cam, 286 or 302.
rising rate fuel pressure regulator.
four branch with a free flow exhaust system.
Fully ported and flowed head with larger valves.
lightened and balanced bottom end with lightened f/wheel.

Go 2.0 to start with or even better 2.0 abf with kr cams and remap and look down the barrel of 190-200 (even on kjet) with built in reliability on standard parts.

?

So would that still be 8v?

I believe that's basically what Mikes doing in the Jetta but he's getting a bit more serious on the internals.

So what realistically can be achieved on the 1.8 with induction, port and polish, free flow exhaust manifold and system and the half way house cam (+15 bhp for the cam)
