PostSubject: lost drive   Tue Mar 31 2009, 10:54

hi guys

ive got a mk4 golf 1.6SE and was jus wonderin if you may know why i keep goin through gearbox's and driveshafts like theres no tomorow?

i havent thrashed it or anything when i have driven it but thats only been for about 4 days over the last month! the rest of the time its been in a garage..its a trust worthy garage and the works been done properly but i jus don't get why it keeps doin it..

i had a lowered and it run fine for a good month or so, then my origional box went, the diff blew on it so i got that sorted and 2 days later the new box went, same problem.. so i then forked out another load of money to get a new box put it, got it back and a day later when i jus got to southend my driveshaft broke.. had that fixed got it back friday and sunday morning i lost drive at brampton hut before gtifest

im gutted and dont know wat to do next, any ideas?? would me lowering it cause it to keep doin this?

my mates mk4 gti has been dropped the same on the ame coilovers but he hasnt had any problems with his..this is why its confusin me so much as to what could be causin it

sounds an interesting one,

what size wheels are you driving on? how low is the car have you measured it? when the wheels are on the floor what angle are the driveshafts at going into the gearbox?

you say your friend has the same setup? just coilovers or wheels/engine etc..?

it sounds to me the angle of the driveshaft is pulling it out of the gearbox very slightly, just enough to lose drive and cause alot of strian on the diff.

im drivin on 18" replica r32 wheels, i have just measured it and to the bottom of my arch its 25" from the floor, the driveshafts do look to be coming straight out at the gearbox but then slightly angle up to the wheel from the first c.v boot, do you think it could be too low?
my mate has a gti mk4, the exact same coilover set but is running some 17" wheels, despite the smaller wheels his is still lower than mine and he's never had a problem with it..dont get it

yeh i have blown 2 diffs and a driveshaft since i had it lowered but before the first diff went it was fine, if i raised it and the diff has actually gone again im stilll gunna get no drive right?

i didnt know whether puttin a diesel box on it would help it or not because i've heard it'd be stronger but i'll lose some top end speed in the gears because of the ratios..

cheers for your help guys,. much appreciated

id like to take a look at it first mate, it could be a number of things really worn engine mount etc.. id rather find the fault than just put another box in it, 2days on a new box means there must be something major wrong going on.

i can get it collected on a trailor if you want me to take a look at it for you.
