PostSubject: mk3 tdi gearbox question   Tue Oct 20 2009, 11:12

if i was to put a pd130 1.9tdi engine in my mk3 golf (most likely out of a mk4) would i be able to attach and use a 6 speed box from a mk3?

after thinking about all the possible options for my car ive decided that a VR is just too thirsty. after reading up about tdi engines, the pd130 (aka 130hp) is pretty much a restriced pd150. they have the same injector rails and pretty much the same engine, the only difference is a slightly bigger turbo with a front mounted intercooler and some ecu differences.

so if i buy a td130 and get it remapped im not crazy to think i could easily get 150/60hp with about 250/275lbft or torque. which combined with 40 odd mile to the gallon il be happy Smile

a completely standard pd130 with a jabba remap does 184 bhp and 300+ftlbs of torque. Not sure on the 6 speed thing im sure ive read its really big, will require custom shafts etc. Easier to use a 5 speed i think?

or maybe just use the mk4 6 speed with the mk4 drive shafts and hubs?

Yeah the 6 speed boxes are huge, so wouldnt be alot of room and probs custom mounts, that without the driveshaft issues tiz mentioned. all that work n money for not alot of gain really, be easy to have a longer final drive fitted to the 5 speed

ok then il fit up the five box. didnt think 6 speeds were that much bigger but obviously so.

matty or tiz do you know if the five speed diesel box from the mk3 diesel will mount on the pd130 engine?

i remember reading somewhere that there is a PD box that is 5 speed cant remember what it came in though, PD100 mk5s ring a bell as im sure they are 5 speed not 6 cause i know our pd100 passat was a 5 speed irrelevant to this cause its a longitudinal engine i just imagine if they made them 5 speeds they probably made the golf mk5 a 5 speed too. Probably hard to find though?

after looking into it, it seems the 150's and most of the 130s have 6 speed boxes because they can handle more torque whereas the 110s and some 130s have the 5 speed box because they dont put out as much power.

this is an answer i got on edition and was just wondering if he spoke the truth about the box lining up:

"so i'd go for one of the PD engines from a mk4 platform car

should drop straight in on the stock engine mounts

obv you'd need to work on the ECU and loom to get it running but there's plenty of solutions for that

also you'd need a custom downpipe, intercooler and pipework

should also bolt straight up to a mk3 diesel 'box so you dont have to mess about with different shifter towers or pedal set-up"

well a mk3 tdi box is an 02a has the same bolt pattern as any other 02a like on the 16vs etc. So your question is will a pd130 bolt to an 02a box. im sure 02a boxes can take good power... its just the rush of torque you get from remapped PD lumps. Can it handle that?

as previously mentioned pd100 engines use the 5 speed box, they are also used in fabia mk1's

max a stock pd130 engine like whats in my fabia is around 136hp and 229lb/ft standard, and as tiz said with a map your looking at 170~185ish bhp and 300~330ish lb/ft of torque!

the standard 6 speed gearbox can handle this but the standard clutch can only comfortably handle around 280lb/ft or so im told

EDIT: just realised you've decided against this so thats useless irrevelant info, my bad

the good thing about vw engine and boxes is that alot of them are interchangable. i think you would be fine fitting a mk3 box to a mk4 engine.

also there is a mk4 box, cant remember which code which is almost identical to that of a mk2 gti box.

it will all come down to a nice beefy clutch in the end

i was thinking that. im going to put an "uprated" clutch in it just to be sure. fingers crossed the box can take the strain, but theres only one way to find out
